So about a couple of years ago, I started singing. Somehow. Starting a musical career at 48 (now 50) is a good way to avoid dying at 27. I'll let you know how that goes!
And now we form a 2 piece band, doing our thing for the heck of it.
Behold us, the Knowing Believers.
There is a typical "me stupid story" behind the name. Daft is an adjective I self- identify with and I'm proud.
Actually, it was my friend Mika that started me singing.
He’s a musical doer he’s been in bands. He’s written songs. He’s been in music of the noisy guitar variety since he was near high to a grasshopper . He plays bass and lead guitar and has since taught himself how to make a home studio and to produce (as in sound engineer, mixing tracks, actually making the final mix) music..
We started with him on acoustic guitar and me wailing into a battery powered mic recorder of some kind.
Things quickly got out of hand (in a good way).... We now have a fistful of different microphones and hardware sound cards and a full size electronic organ with MIDI into the studio PC, amps galore and a basketball team's worth of guitars (some home-made, he's clever!!).
I did a couple of awful-to-average cover versions of songs that we gave up very quickly on, as I realized that singing in the shower or when hammering on the steering wheel is a very different animal to actually singing.
Since then, we fine-tuned our cover repertoire, and found some songs that were closer to my capabilities. Some have been recorded, uploaded on this site, pretty rough around the edges but a good way to start to discover how I could try to sing.
Then at the start of 2025, Mika came to me and said "Dude we’ve got to start trying to write our own stuff, cover versions are OK and all that but the real fun is in original compositions" . He'd actually written some instrumental songs already, and said I should try to test my as yet undiscovered song-writing skills.
To this day I’m still surprised at myself, having never done anything even close to writing songs before.
So far I have written the lyrics for the 5 songs that are in our E.P., and have bits of stuff that I’ve written down that just came out of the blue. Whenever, whatever, and even if it was random, i started to write it down. Some of it made no sense and but it was a trigger for something different.
For me what counts is that the two of us are having fun. There is something weirdly enchanting about finding yourself outside of your comfort zone and finding you get some comfort from doing so.
